The World Bank and the IMF are collectively known as the Bretton Woods institutions. They were formed at a conference in Bretton Woods in New Hampshire with the aim to addressing concerns to do with stability of world economic markets. For purposes of this research, I will restrict myself to discussing what is known as the structural adjustment program popularly (SAPs) in Kenya. According to Rono, J. K. (2002) Kenya adopted economic reforms mainly with the aim of achieving macroeconomic and structural adjustment which were initiated by the World Bank and the IMF in from 1980 onwards. Effective Communication Among Group And Team Functioning
Communication is the sharing of ideas, thoughts and information between or among individuals. It is important to understand the true meaning and emotion behind the expressed information, and this can often become quite difficult when the subjectivity and complexity of nonverbal cues gets thrown into the mix. The application of three skills changes as managers move up in the organization. Although the degree of each skill necessary at different levels of an organization may vary, all managers must possess skills in each of these important areas to perform effectively. The purpose of this essay is to clearly show that the importance of conceptual skills that managers are required to demonstrate. While technical skills focus on things and human skills focus on people, conceptual skills focus on ideas and concepts (yukl. 2002). According to Katz, these skills extend to visualizing the relationship of the firm to the external environment. Katz 1995 argue conceptual skill involves the managerââ¬â¢s thinking, make decision and planning abilities. It also involves understanding where the sector fits into the whole organization and how the organization fits into the variates areas. Parkinsons Disease Essays - Neuroscience, Biology, Brain
Parkinson's Disease : Parkinson's disease affects the nerve cells in the brain that produce dopamine. Parkinson's disease symptoms include muscle rigidity ,tremors , and changes in speech and gait. After diagnosis, treatments can help relieve symptoms. Figure SEQ Figure \* ARABIC 3 :Dopamine levels in normal and a pakinson's affected neuron Stem cell therapy in parkinson's disease : Doctors firstly isolated adult stem cells from the patient's brain, they were then cultured in vitro and encouraged to turn into dopamine-producing neurons. As soon as tests showed that the cells were producing dopamine they were then re-injected into the man's brain. After the transplant, the man's condition was seen to improve and he experienced a reduction in the trembling and muscle rigidity associated with the disease. Brain scans taken 3-months after the transplant revealed that dopamine production had increased by 58%, however it later dropped but the Parkinson's symptoms did not return. The study is the first human study to show that stem cell transplants can help to treat Parkinson's. The use of fetal-derived neural stem cells has shown significant promise in rodent models of Parkinson's disease, and the potential for tumorigenicity appears to be minimal. The authors report that undifferentiated human neural stem cells ( hNSCs ) transplanted into severely Parkinsonian 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP)-treated primates could survive, migrate, and induce behavioral recovery of Parkinsonian symptoms, which were directly related to reduced dopamine levels in the nigrostriatal system ( 5 ) . Working with these cells, the researchers created dopamine neurons deficient in DJ-1, a gene mutated in an inherited form of Parkinson's. They report that DJ-1-deficient cells -- and especially DJ-1-deficient dopamine neurons -- display heightened sensitivity to oxidative stress, caused by products of oxygen metabolism that react with and damage cellular components like proteins and DNA. In a second paper, they link DJ-1 dysfunct ion to the aggregation of alpha- synuclein , a hallmark of Parkinson's neuropathology. ( 6 , HYPERLINK "http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3068820/" \l "b7-ijhs-3-2-0227" 7 ) In summary most of studies using aborted human embryonic tissue indicate that: Clinical benefit does occur; however, the benefit is not marked and there is a delay of many months before the clinical change. Postmortem examinations show that tissue grafts do survive and innervate the striatum. PET scans show that there is an increase in dopamine uptake after transplantation. Follow up studies show that long term benefit does occur with transplantation . ( 8 )

Concepts of International Relations Theories
Concepts of International Relations Theories Introduction Nobody knows why many policymakers and practitioners are so much involved in the erudite study of international dealings. Majority of policymakers dismiss academic theorists of course terming their own reasons. Nevertheless, largely, these policymakers agree that there is an inexorable connection the world of theory and that of policy. Theories are imperative to the blizzard of information that affects peopleââ¬â¢s lives. Although some theories may appear futile in policymaking, some of them are fundamental to the policymaking process.Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Concepts of International Relations Theories specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More To some extent, the two are interdependent in that good policies emanate form theoretical principles, while good theories come after understanding the real world. However, theories do not incarcerate the policymaking process. Instead, they offer an array of idea s on how to develop foreign policies from the theoretical orthodoxies. Starting from the end of the Second World War, many policymakers have continued to fault international relations as a subject. This prompted scholars to develop several theories, which have since met criticisms between analysts and policymakers. The two main contentious theories are realism and liberalism (Stephen, 1998, p.1). Realism During the Cold War, realism was the dominant theory in explaining international affairs. Although elucidatory on the ways of eliminating conflict and war, many policymakers found it faulty in its approaches towards imperialism, international cooperation and competition. Many policymakers believe that this theory ignored human nature and instead focuses on the international structure alone. Thus, employing this theory into practice means that the world will become unsafe through increased wars because every great power is seeking to control other nations (Wally, 1995. pp.13-21). Thi s theory makes assumptions that nations resemble each other even when there are rich countries and poor countries. Therefore, nations must look for modalities of amassing resources in order to determine the level of their powers. This perception can lead to security dilemma hence making many policymakers to pin down some of the theories of international relations. This theory makes nations appear individualistic, as the main aim is to protect self-interests for survival (Forde, 1995, pp. 141-160). Liberalism Liberalism is another theory of international relations that has met criticism from many policymakers. Just like realism, the theory assumes that all nations are equal economically and military. Many policymakers argue that economic interdependence of states will babysit other nations from developing their own economy using the available resources. Additionally, the theory principally selects few transnational actors for example, multinational corporations from rich countries to control the worldââ¬â¢s economy.Advertising Looking for essay on international relations? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More This is disadvantageous to other smaller corporations especially in underdeveloped countries as they will not grow faster to reach the international standards. Through this theory, there is increased poverty around the world. Although this theory asserts that nations should strive to achieve economic dependence, it presents egoistic ideas under anarchical conditions. The other problem with this theory as depicted out by many policymakers is that it assumes all people irrespective of their background are hungry for political, economic and military supremacy. From this assumption, it is hard to establish a policy that will cater for the needs of the whole people (Copeland, 1996, pp. 5-12). Conclusion The main reason why many theories of international relations are of no use to policymakers is th at these theories are mainly assumptions and take all human beings and nations are unitary. In reality, this is not the case. Each region or country in the world has its own resources. These resources are the one that sets the foundation of building the economy of the citizenry. Many of these theories assert that every human being should strive egoistically to achieve personal success. Whenever this fails to happen, the have-nots will turn to those who have and finally conflict and war ensues. Nevertheless, we cannot discard these theories as they give us the glimpse of our future. In the same case, the practical world of policymaking should dictate human beings to develop theories consistent with real life. References Copeland, D., 1996. Common History of oppression of people of African descent and Research Paper
Common History of oppression of people of African descent and indigenous peoples in the United States and South Africa - Research Paper Example Black South Africans faced much discrimination against them during the colonial period whose effects can be felt to this day. The period of apartheid was characterized by the racial segregation of the majority Africans by the government. The apartheid period lasted for forty-six years (1948-1994) and during this time, many sufferings were incurred on the part of the majority African inhabitants. This research paper will primarily look at the crimes and violations committed, harms caused to the majority south Africans, the setbacks that can still be felt, the losses suffered and finally clearly lay out the reasons why the black Africans in south Africa should be compensated. Apartheid simply meant separation. It was more concern with putting apart the white and the black inhabitants. It can be seen that the separation had always existed in South Africa. This is evident in the 1913 Land Act, which suggested the separation of living areas for both whites and blacks (LoÃËtter 21). The black inhabitants were forced to move to reserves while the whites were left to dominate and control all the available resources. In 1948, apartheid intensified after the white dominated Afrikaner National Party (ANP) won the elections. The goal of this separation was not only to separate Africans from the whites but also to separate Africans from one another by dividing them within their ethnic lines so that they could their political power. The inhabitants were separated into four groups, the majority blacks, whites, the colored people and Indians. The colored were a mixed race, which sometimes saw families being separated as parents could be classified as white while chil dren were seen as non-whites, therefore, alienated. 80% of the land was given to the whites while the other majority races only occupied the remaining 20% (LoÃËtter 14). To further emphasize on separation, the government made sure that the whites had separate and better public facilities apart from
